Observation Narrative
Floodplain forest on the small floodplain of Buffalo Creek with exposed, deep alluvial sand. This sample captures the early spring aspect of the diverse floodplain flora. Herbaceous species include many spring ephemerals and other nutrient-demanding species, as well as nine non-native species. Later in the season, the shrub layer will be dense with leafed out Asimina triloba, Carpinus caroliniana, and Lindera benzoin. Platanus occidentalis and Juglans nigra are the principal overstory trees in this particularly rich part of the floodplain.
